What Is a Frozen ATPL?

The common industry phrase explained without suggesting that “frozen ATPL” is a separate licence.

“Frozen ATPL” is common industry shorthand. It is not normally the title of a separate licence printed with the word frozen. It describes a pilot who has completed the theoretical knowledge and professional training normally required to become eligible for airline co-pilot roles, but has not yet accumulated the experience required for a full ATPL.

What the shorthand usually includes

The precise package and issue requirements depend on the licensing authority and route. Candidates commonly refer to:

  • ATPL theoretical knowledge examinations
  • A Commercial Pilot Licence
  • An instrument rating, often with multi-engine privileges
  • Advanced upset prevention and recovery training where required
  • MCC or APS MCC training appropriate to the intended route

What remains “frozen”

The theoretical examinations and qualifications support the early professional licence, but a full ATPL requires prescribed flight experience and other current requirements. Pilots normally build that experience while working in multi-pilot operations before applying to have the full licence issued.

Joris’s view

Do not make career decisions from shorthand alone. Ask which actual licence, ratings and certificates will be issued, by which authority, and what employers in your intended market require.

Three common misunderstandings

  1. It is not an airline job. Completing the training package makes you eligible to apply; it does not create a vacancy or guarantee selection.
  2. It is not authority-neutral. UK CAA and EASA documents are not interchangeable simply because the training is described with the same informal phrase.
  3. It is not the end of training. Type-specific training, operator conversion, line training and recurrent checking still follow.

Use the regulator’s current licensing material and ask every provider to list the exact documents you will hold at graduation.
